Board pushes for bus decision

Girl shaves for cancer – p2

■■ Superstop, waiting lounge issue rolls on BY GRACE CABELL

Riccarton-Wigram Community Board members are pushing for a decision on superstops and a passenger waiting-lounge in Riccarton. The city council is planning two superstops with parking for four buses on either side of Riccarton Rd, and to convert a building on the corner of Riccarton Rd and Division St into a passenger waiting-lounge for up to 100 people. But the community board is pushing for urgent negotiations to be made for a Westfield Riccarton car park site instead.

At a meeting on November 25 a decision was made by the community board to fast-track negotiations. City council environmental committee chairman Phil Clearwater said earlier plans to build a smaller passenger lounge in the Westfield car park were abandoned after the city council was unable to negotiate a satisfactory lease. Director of Scentre Group which owns and operates Westfield, Justin Lynch, said the group was willing to continue discussions. • Turn to page 7

Four years ago Paige Stolzenberger, 13, lost her father to cancer. Now she’s determined to do her bit to help combat the disease. The Templeton teenager will have her long blonde hair shaved off at the Hope Presbyterian Church in Hornby, on December 13 to raise funds for cancer research. Paige’s father Win Stolzenberger died in 2010 after a long battle with a brain tumour. She was eight at the time. Paige’s mother Wendy said both Paige and herself had known a number of other people who had died or suf-

fered from cancer. “It is all too common,” Ms Stolzenberger said. “I think the main effect for Paige has been working through that and when it comes into the home what really can you do?” Paige said that having lost her father it was good to be able to do something to help other cancer sufferers. “A while ago I grew my hair long and cut my ponytail off to make wigs down in Dunedin and ever since then I wanted to do something a little bit more just to raise money for research in relation to cancer that would help people.”

Her friends at Middleton Grange School have been helping her make posters for the head shave event and her fundraising page had already raised $430. She was hoping to raise between $800 and $1000. Ms Stolzenberger said shaving her hair off was a reasonably big deal for a 13-year-old girl. “She surprises me. She said ‘this is what people go through when they have the treatment, mum, so why should I be worried about it? I’m not. It will grow back’. ” • To donate to Paige’s cause, visit www.givealittle.co.nz/ member/Paige13

Halswell residents have a range of Christmas events to choose from. Festivities start with the Carols at the Quarry event on Sunday, December 7 from 4-6.30pm. The event features carol singing along with the Stedfast Brass band at the Halswell Quarry. The iconic event had been organised by The Lions Club of Halswell for 23 years. This event is followed by Carols by Tree-light on Thursday, December 11 from 6.30pm at St John of God Halswell, Aidanfield. Singing will be led by the Halswell Community Choir with song sheets provided for singing along. The project had been organised by the St John of God Hauora Trust, the Halswell Community Project, Halswell Community Choir, Halswell Menzshed and schools and pre-schools in the area. The final event is the Carols at Westlake on Saturday, December 13 from 5-7.30pm at the Westlake Reserve. Everyone would be provided a song book and was encouraged to sing. The event was supported by The Breeze radio station and run by the South Christchurch Christian Community Trust. All three events were community driven and led, and were supported by the city council and Riccarton-Wigram Community Board. For further details about each event go to: www.bethere.co.nz

Owner angry with land plan

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Housing proposal

The city council has agreed to a qualified approval in principle for the Champions Mile housing proposal for land at Riccarton Park Racecourse. The city council has invited Ngai Tahu Property Limited to continue to develop the specifics of the proposal in order to achieve full approval in principle status as an exemplar housing project.

BY GRACE CABELL

A well-known property owner in Halswell is furious that he may lose his land. Land owned by Graeme Nicholl of Going Properties Ltd on 345 Halswell Rd may be rezoned under the city council’s Proposed District Plan Review. Halswell Residents’ Association member David Hawke is hoping to win the battle for the land after placing a cross submission to the city council to create youth facilities on the property. He said the land, which backed up against the new Halswell Library and community facility, could be the answer to a vandalism spike in the area. Last week the Western News broke the news of three parked cars on Wales St having windows smashed and wing mirrors broken. Mr Hawke said his son had also had his car damaged on Halswell Rd and multiple bus shelters in the area had been smashed. A kindergarten had also been hit by extensive tagging. But Mr Nicholl said youth facilities in the area would only create a meeting place for youth to “get up to no good.” The property owner was seeking for the land to be moved from residential to commercial so he could put a new petrol station on it. He had previously owned the land which was now being used to develop the new Halswell Library and Community Facility. “We have turned so many people

Speed limits approved

New speed limits have been approved by the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board outside Hornby Primary School on Waterloo Rd. A new variable speed limit of 40km/h would be placed in the school speed zone. The community board has been requested to recommend the city council include the new limit in the city council register of speed limits.

away over the last 25 years. Finally someone came and took it. We were very much an unwilling seller.” “This is the last straw,” he said. Mr Hawke said there was no guarantee it would put a stop to vandalism. “But I do think where young people feel they have ownership in the community they are less likely to do that,” he said. Mr Nicholl said he did not believe youth facilities were what residents wanted. “The fact they want to put a skateboard park there horrifies us,” he said.

New RSA president plans a new The newly-elected national president of the Royal New Zealand Returned Services Association is planning a quiet revolution of the iconic RSA movement. Christchurch’s Barry John (BJ) Clark wants all RSAs to become even more effective and relevant to today’s members and for generations to come. Mr Clark joined the New Zealand Army as a regular force cadet 44 years ago intent on a career as a carpenter/joiner. The cadet school in Waiouru was established to identify the future leaders. At the time it would not have known the future leader of the RSA was in the class of 1970. Mr Clark spent 21 years in the New Zealand Army serving in Singapore, Fiji, the Antarctic and the Sinai Peninsula. He said one experience that stood out was the six months he spent in Moscow helping to refurbish the New Zealand Embassy. “We lived in the basement, often covered in dust. Our job was to make the embassy secure. It’s a memory I’ll always have,” Mr Clark said. He said another defining moment was seeking out the British War Grave cemeteries in Sinai – the resting place of hundreds of Kiwis who fought there during World War 1.

HONOUR: Barry (BJ) Clark is the newly elected national president of the Royal New Zealand Returned Services.

“There was so much sadness reading the names of soldiers and not a dry eye anywhere. They were so far from home and unable to be brought back. I thought of the sacrifices they made in the desert,” he said. He was also a member of the United Nations multi-national force that helped maintain the peace in the Middle Eastern hot spot. Mr Clark left the army in 1991 as a warrant officer and senior trades instructor. “The army shaped me. It taught me skills, leadership, camaraderie, how to accept differences in people and work with them,” he said. In 1998 Mr Clark became the Papanui RSA president. From there he was appointed Canterbury district president and then national vice president in 2008. Mr Clark said in his new role he wanted to emphasise the new attitude as the RSA approached a second century of service. “The spirit of Anzac saw our men and women look out for and support each other and come together in comradeship. A hundred years later I want that same attitude to be enhanced in RSAs throughout New Zealand,” he said. As national president Mr Clark will lead the RSA’s centennial commemorations of New Zea-

landers who served in the World War 1, at Gallipoli, the Western Front and in the Middle East. “My goal is to lead a quiet revolution of attitudes – changing the way Kiwis see the RSA, bringing associations together to share their strengths, showing New Zealand that we welcome them into the RSA movement and championing our current service personnel as well as our veterans.” He said the revolution had already begun. Last month the RSA launched its national association – a new online based RSA for current service personnel who move frequently. The service would also benefit Kiwis of all ages and backgrounds who did not currently have an RSA connection. The national association allowed users to access RSAs in New Zealand and RSL clubs in Australia. It also provided them with a club card which granted exclusive benefits and deals through a range of quality trusted brands. In its most recent online annual report, the RSA showed membership was stable, with some clubs reporting an increase. Revenue streams have improved and the Veterans Support Act, providing a new basis for Government support for veterans, was passed in Parliament.

facility under way Construction of a 18,900 sq m facility has started at Wigram. Skellerup’s Dairy Rubberware Development and manufacturing facility at Wigram Business Park was marked on Thursday 27 with a Maori blessing along with the traditional sod turning ceremony. Performing the blessing that prepares the land for construction was Ngāi Tūāhuriri rūnanga Tāua Aroha Reriti - Crofts. Turning the first sod was the Skellerup chairman Sir Selwyn Cushing. “This is an extremely important project for Skellerup being a significant investment to build a world-class facility. It is also important for Christchurch and our people here,” he said. “This purpose-built facility will serve our Agri-division and ensure that we remain at the cutting edge of what we do for both our New Zealand and international customers.” He said chemists, engineers, technicians and the manufacturing team would thrive in the new environment by working closely to develop new and smart solutions. Sir Selwyn thanked all those involved in bringing the project to this point including the Skellerup team, lead contractor Calder Stewart, project advisor Beca and project champion Sir Ron Carter.

HISTORY: National RSA president Barry ‘BJ’ Clark with memorabilia in the Papanui RSA. New sponsorships were launched and recipients of awards were championed. As the RSA approaches its own centenary in 2016, Mr Clark said its work was as vital as ever. “While we still have men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to serve their country, we have a role to play in looking after them and providing support,” he says. Mr Clark had been impressed with the resurgence of interest by young

people in the milestones leading up to and including the early involvement of New Zealand in World War 1. “We’ve seen young New Zealanders attending Anzac Day ceremonies in increasing numbers. Many are honouring their family members. Now we want to attract them to an RSA that is relevant and alive,” he said. Looking to the future, the RSA had begun planning its own centenary for 2016.

Building consent for the project has been granted. Sir Selwyn acknowledged the input from the city council which delivered on its commitment to deal with Skellerup’s building application in a timely and constructive manner. He said Wigram Business Park developers Ngāi Tahu Property Ltd had also

been very supportive and helpful. The park was well placed to access both the Port of Lyttelton and Christchurch Airport, both important links for Skellerup’s exports. Construction was expected to be completed in December next year with the relocation process from Woolston commencing immediately after.

Streets to be named after crashed pilots

Grant for student Riccarton student Lucy McLeod is one of eight young Cantabrians who received grants last week to help them achieve their goals. The next year will be a big one for the 22-year-old, who will complete her double law and arts degree, take up presidency of the Student Volunteer Army, and travel to Harvard to compete in the Model United Nations convention. She will use the Inspire Foundation grant towards her trip to the convention as part of a New Zealand delegation, meeting with 3000 other students from across the world.

BY GRACE CABELL

Streets in a new housing development in Wigram will be named after two pilots killed in mid-air collision over the airbase. Halswell resident Ron Fensom has been successful in convincing city council to name the streets after Edwin Ebbett and Erling Ziesler. The pair were killed when their planes collided over the Wigram airbase in 1953. Mr Fensom had asked the city council to place a memorial for victims of the 1953 Wigram air crash before the housing development was completed. The subdivision adjoining Wigram Rd would create a cul de sac running off the newly-formed Platinum Drive. It would be named Edwin Ebbett Place, with the right-of-way as Erling Ziesler Lane. Mr Fensom said he took an interest in the crash site after speaking to a resident who had been working on the area at the time and had seen the crashed planes. The crash happened on October 10 when Edwin Ebbett and Erling Ziesler who were in the air force crashed their De Havilland Devons. The two Devons took part in the 27-aircraft flypast Valued atover Harewood International Airport for $ the official prize-giving ceremony.

Already a community volunteer and community leader for many years, the grant will help her towards her goal of a career in international relations. The Inspire Foundation has made grants to 108 young people since it was launched in September 2011. It is unique to New Zealand and is a registered charity dedicated to supporting Canterbury’s young talent.

Push for bus decision TRAGEDY: An image of the air crash from the October 11, 1953 Christchurch Star-Sun. Inset: Halswell resident Ron Fensom led a call for a memorial for victims of the 1953 Wigram air crash. Flight Lieutenant Ebbett was from Geraldine and Flight Lieutenant Ziesler was from Christchurch. It was the highest loss of life incurred by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in a single New Zealand incident. Mr Fensom said he was more than happy with the street naming. “It’s good our landscape is going to change and people will be aware of the historic foundings behind it as well.”

At the ceremony the wings of the two aircraft touched each other, and both aircraft went out of control and struck the ground 180m apart. The first aircraft had led the last section of the flypast marking the London to Christchurch Air Race prize giving ceremony. Both aircraft immediately lost control and plunged to the ground in a paddock. All seven people aboard both aircraft were killed.

• From page 1 Community board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton said she believed the city council had drawn the line under Westfield too quickly. “If you don’t or won’t go there you’re left with the difficult choice to go back to the city,” she said. Community board chairman Mike Mora said using the Westfield site would be less disruptive and less expensive in the long term. “We want negotiations to continue with speed with Westfield. But if these completely fail then we will have to go to plan B in Division St,” said Mr Mora. As part an Environment Canterbury city wide Metro review fewer bus services would now

run all the way to the central city which meant more passengers would need to transfer at Riccarton. A decision had also been made regarding the committee dealing with changes on bus priority matters in Upper Riccarton. Although decisions on the proposed Riccarton Rd bus hub were being made by the city council, bus priority matters were being delegated by a four-person committee, with no Riccarton representatives. “If it’s a major issue, which it is, it all needs to be ratified by full council,” said Mrs Broughton. The final decision would be made by the city council on December 11.

Sprinklers – small yet life saving BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Auto dismantlers use gas cutting devices to remove some of the parts from the vehicles they are wrecking. Occasionally something goes a bit wrong and the vehicle ignites. From what I understand this is usually quickly righted by the use of a fire extinguisher. Unfortunately for workers at a dismantling shop in Cran-

ford St on Monday the fire that occurred in a vehicle included petrol and rapidly filled the building with black smoke. The staff made a hasty exit as flames reached the ceiling. I visited the premises on Tuesday afternoon. The building should have been a smoking wreck. It wasn’t. Other than the fire-damaged car pushed to one side it was business as usual. Engines were being removed, panels disassembled.

Why? Because the building had a sprinkler system. A single sprinkler head had quickly reached operating temperature and set itself off. It put the fire out. We constantly see developers utilising fire engineers to justify the non-installation of sprinklers, often in very large buildings with high fire loads. That’s because sprinklers are expensive and will quite probably sit their whole life doing absolutely nothing. Developers back the odds.

One in 1000 buildings might suffer a major fire. The odds say it won’t be theirs. However, every couple of weeks television reports a major industrial fire somewhere in New Zealand. There would have been one on Monday if it was not for a sprinkler system. As it is the business owner is making money. The staff still have their jobs. That is why firefighters love sprinklers.

Hornby company celebrates success A company in Hornby has celebrated the end of two years’ work with a graduation ceremony for 23 Christchurch employees. On November 7, 12 staff at B&D Doors Ltd earned their National Certificate in Core Skills (Manufacturing) and 11 earned a level two National Certificate in Competitive Manufacturing. The programme titled Proj-

ect Commitment helped the Christchurch operation shift from Bromley to Hornby and work as a mark of members gaining a nationally recognised qualification in manufacturing. For the majority of learners this was their first and only qualification as many left school at a young age. With an average employee age of 46, most of the learners

had not been in the education system for over 30 years. The first 12 months of the course was targeted at improving numeracy and literacy skills to help with ensuring the success of this initiative. The qualification was held through the Hagley Adult Learning Centre, Competenz, the Industry Training Organisation and the manufacturing industry.

SUCCESS: Executive general manager of B&D Australia and New Zealand Tony Bova, Ray Baxter and B&D New Zealand operations manager Paul Dryden.

TEAM EFFORT: (Top row left to right) – Tulipe Gale, Geoffery Bowkett, Tom Tanswell, Joseph Maugaotega, Colin Miles, Scott Russell, Patrick Lewis, Rochelle Chapman, Shane Peters, Brent Wigney. Middle Row – Zane Branthwaite, Sue Vallance (tutor), Ray Baxter, Ian Roberts, Paul Labrooy, Marguerite Bodger, Mikel Kavanagh, Pita Faau. Solving the lower back pain puzzle LOWER BACK PAIN IS A COMMON INJURY.

In fact, more than 80 per cent of the population will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives. While lower back pain is extremely common, the symptoms and severity of lower back pain vary greatly.

LOWER BACK PAIN CAUSES Pain can be linked to a general cause such as muscle strain, injury or over use – or it can be attributed to a specific diagnosed condition of the spine. These can include: •Herniated Disc •Degenerative Disc Disease •Spondylolisthesis •Spinal Stenosis •Osteoarthritis The lower back is an intricate structure of interconnected and overlapping elements which includes tendons and muscles and other soft tissues, highly sensitive nerves and nerve roots that travel from the lower back down into the legs and feet, small and complex joints and spinal discs with their gelatinous inner cores. An irritation or problem with any of

these structures can cause lower back pain and/or pain that radiates or is referred to other parts of the body. Pain from ensuing lower back muscle spasms can be severe, and pain from a number of syndromes can become chronic.

GARDENING

Plant yourself a cosmos floral fiesta By Tod Palenski

These days, garden design seems to be all about simple foliage and clean lines. As much as I admire the contemporary look, sometimes I prefer a bit of wild flower-like personality in my back yard. That’s where the easy-to-grow cosmos comes in to play. Bursting with hot summer colours and growing to around 1m tall, cosmos are no shrinking violets. In fact, I love the way they sway gently in any summer breeze. These devil-may-care flowers also come with easy growing instructions, thriving in the heat of summer and flourishing almost anywhere, as long as it’s hot, dry and sunny. I’ve learned to give my cosmos plenty

of admiring glances during the warmer months as, like all annuals, they germinate, flower and die within a season or a year. But don’t fret – they also pop up again each following year. For me, cosmos look best when grown en masse, creating a sea of countrycottage colour. So, I recommend getting your hands on as many seedlings as you can afford. Once you’ve found a good spot and you’re ready to plant these American natives, add a good general fertiliser, like nitrophoska blue, to the soil to encourage growth. Then simply dig a hole (approximately 3cm deep) and place your seedling inside. Plant each subsequent seedling about 10cm apart, giving them space to

grow but ensuring they’re close enough to support each other in strong winds. Next, layer newspaper around your plants, and then cover it with peastraw. This homemade mulch will prevent your plants drying out during the day and in between watering sessions. Voila – you’ll have a cosmos floral fiesta in no time, and get to enjoy an array of colour until the first frost hits, usually around June. And if you really want to bring the outside in, just a handful of these longstemmed beauties look great in a tall vase (just don’t forget to put them in a cool place and change the water every two to three days). You’ll be thanking yourself for adding a bit of country colour at your place.

Things to do in December garden General ■ Raise blades on your mower so you don’t scalp your lawn and kill off the grass. ■ Holiday-proof your plants by ensuring that they’re well mulched. ■ Although well-mulched garden beds will stay moist for long periods, pots can dry out in just one hot day. Move pots into more shade and group them to keep each other cool. Fruit ■Water and fertilise fruit trees to ensure

bumper crops and spray pip and stone fruit to prevent fungus diseases. ■ Feed and water citrus and check for naughty bugs and slugs. ■ Trim excessive grapevine growth. Flowers and ornamentals ■ Stake your sunflowers. ■ Feed flowering annuals and perennials with liquid fertiliser and apply a side dressing of general fertiliser to flowering shrubs. ■ Sow Cosmos seeds direct into garden beds and by late summer the plants will

be in full display. Cosmos make great cut flowers. Vegetables ■ Stake tomatoes securely, remove laterals, feed, and water regularly. Apply side dressing of blood and bone or general garden fertiliser ■ Mulch, feed and water cucurbits to reduce the risk of powdery mildew. ■ Keep a watch for caterpillers. ■ Plant herbs in plastic containers so you take them with you to enjoy on your summer camping holiday.

Why hire a professional? Arborists specialise in the care of individual trees. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees, and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees. Services an Arborist can Provide: • Pruning: An arborist can determine the type of pruning necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees. • Tree Removal: Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. An arborist can help decide whether a tree should be removed. • Emergency Tree Care: An arborist can assist in performing emergency tree care in a safe manner, while reducing further risk of damage to property. • Planting: Some arborists plant trees, and most can recommend species that are appropriate for a particular location. • Plant Health Care: Preventive maintenance helps keep trees in good health while reducing any insect, disease, or site problems.

• Many other services: Consulting services, tree risk assessment, cabling and bracing trees, etc Tips for choosing an arborist Get more than one quote unless you know, and are comfortable with the arborist. Don’t always accept the lowest bid, it pays to check credentials to ensure that you get what you pay for Be wary of cold calling individuals and those who go door to door offering bargains for performing tree work. Most reputable companies are usually too busy to solicit work in this manner For more information or a free no obligation quote contact Michael on 021 0831 7293/ 03 3602962. Beauty career

J

ordan Taylor likes “the sense of mastering the art of beauty”. Currently studying the Diploma in Beauty Therapy at The National School of Aesthetics, she feels she, “enjoys the practical application of ideas”, and the beauty programme is an outlet for these strengths. She’s passionate about makeup, waxing, manicure and electrology. Despite holding no formal secondary qualifications because school did not hold her interest, Jordan’s strong grades at NaSA reflect her passion. After researching other beauty institutions, Jordan chose NaSA as she respected their professionalism, strong reputation and welcoming staff. She also feels her classmates make her study more enjoyable. Jordan’s not only starting a beauty career for herself but also for her two children, Ashton (six) and Noah (three). NaSA’s 9am to 1pm class times have helped her negotiate study and motherhood. “Without NaSA’s flexible hours, it would have been impossible for me to study,” she

Her children have grown to have “a deeper understanding of homework”. After completing her diploma, she’s studying NaSA’s Certificate in Nail Technology. Once Jordan has mastered these skills, she’ll open her small business from home while “comfortably negotiating my role as a mother”, and eventually develop it into a commercial practice as her children get older. lamourous actress Joan Collins decided to follow her famous sister into writing fiction. When she told Joni Evans, acquisitions editor at Random House, of her intentions, the major publisher anticipated a lucrative coup in novel publishing. They quickly contracted Collins to write two novels and agreed to $4 million as her author’s fee, with $1.2m payable upon signing the contract. Joan Collins duly turned in two manuscripts: The Ruling Passion and Hell Hath No Fury. Both novels described the bedroom antics of two celebrity sisters. However, any links to Joan and Jackie Collins were strenuously denied. Problems arose when Evans decided both manuscripts were “unpublishable trash”. Random House sued Joan Collins for the recovery of their author’s advance payment. Collins argued in court that she had fulfilled her contract and supplied “two complete novel manuscripts”, so she should keep the money. Her contract did not mention “quality of writing”. The judge agreed with Collins about her first book. But he decreed her second book was a lightly veiled reworking of her first manuscript, and thus not a second novel. Thus Collins was allowed to keep her $1.2m signing fee. Further, the court ordered Random House to pay Collins’ defence costs of $925,000. “Writing fiction has changed dramatically

in the last decade,” said Brian Morris, principal at New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “Many of today’s new authors self-publish their books and bypass the big name publishers altogether. We show our writer students how to do this.” Canterbury readers are invited to get the free NZIBS report #1079 Leonard’s Advice for New Writers by calling 0800 801 994, or email principal@nzibs.co.nz.

he After 3 programme gives adult and senior students the opportunity to study a wide range of Hagley’s courses away from their daytime commitments. Hagley believes that everyone should have the opportunity to learn and that these opportunities should be available throughout life. This is what the college’s After 3 programme creates: new opportunities for learning. These programmes are at a secondary learning level but with a difference. ‘‘Personalised learning is at the centre of how we work at Hagley,’’ says deputy principal Mike Fowler. ‘‘Our After 3 courses build the skills and understandings needed

to transition successfully into Senior College NCEA programmes at Hagley, vocational pathways, or in some cases tertiary level programmes. Our After 3 teachers support students to identify and move in the direction they have identified as important. ‘‘We offer over 50 courses in the faculties of art and media, community studies, English, English language learning, food and hospitality, health studies, languages, mathematics, performing arts and practical design,’’ Fowler says. ‘‘More than 750 students each year make the decision to study in After 3. take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all workplaces are the same, take for example an office worker who does not have a high-risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries or the ability to perform effective CPR, the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Imagine the feeling of inadequacy when someone asks, “does anyone know first aid?”, only to find that you were not taught these skills on your course. The wider 12-hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls, and dealing with complex scenes. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Students gain confidence

A

oraki Polytechnic’s hairdressing programme gives its students the confidence and practical skills to gain a foothold within the industry. Second year student Jade Mason (28) heard about the polytechnic’s hairdressing course and decided to apply as it would give her the necessary skills to move into her industry of interest. Jade completed the polytechnic’s Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) in 2013 and began her second year of training in 2014 through the polytechnic’s Certificate in Professional Hairdressing (Level 3). During her second year of study, she began working at Tangles Hair Design on Saturdays and has earned herself a full-time job at the salon by 2015. With her three-year-old son to look after at home, she believed a course suited her schedule better than an apprenticeship, which became part of her reason to enrol at Aoraki. Tutor Julie Costello said the first year of the hairdressing programme give students an insight into the qualities and skills that a potential employer is looking for, and in the second year, Certificate in Professional Hairdressing (Level 3), students could grow this knowledge and their practical skills.

Co-Q10 reduces all causes of

mortality by 50%

R

esearchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial a natural nutrient Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well. In a recent multi country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found to the amazement of the researchers that the patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Also, patients on CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events but from all causes. According to lead study author Professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. It is known that CoQ10 levels decrease in the heart muscle of patients with heart failure as severity worsens. Statin drugs are used

Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure. Prostate management

Device to prevent

The prostate is a walnut-shaped male gland that is wrapped snugly around the urinary tube (urethra).

I

t sits between the bladder and rectum and provides part of the fluid that makes up the semen for male fertility. It is of little significance until about age 50 when for many it tends to enlarge and affect normal urination by restricting urinary flow through the urethra. This condition is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH. It reduces the ability of the bladder to evacuate completely, leading to a want to urinate frequently. This often affects sleep quality by the need to urinate and having to get up frequently throughout the night. Many also notice trouble with urinary flow as well as starting and stopping urination. The word benign in BPH is very significant, as it doesn’t mean prostate cancer — just an enlargement of the prostate. However,

Why put up with broken sleep, when help is at hand with Snorex, an appliance that prevents snoring, sleep apnoea, and dry and raw throats.

S

norex is custom-fitted to your mouth for comfort, and a follow up service is provided. Denise Lim has been involved with Snorex for 18 years and has had a 98 per cent success rate with people using the appliance. Snoring can be a health hazard, causing sleep apnoea, where the person actually stops breathing for short periods. It can cause short-term memory loss, tiredness and contribute to high blood pressure. The Snorex device does not feel restrictive, is non-invasive and carries a money-back guarantee.

Prostate Manager is a high potency comprehensive one-a-day formula containing well researched nutrients to support men’s prostate health. Saw palmetto is a herb that has been used for thousands of years by American Indians for prostate health. It has also been well researched in Europe where it is often prescribed by doctors for BPH. Pygeum is another well-researched herb shown to significantly reduce prostate swelling and help eliminate excess fluid from the prostate. Pumpkin seeds are a source of zinc and fatty acids, and have long been used for prostate health. Stinging nettle is another powerful herb for the prostate and shows promise as a preventative as well as a treatment for prostate cancer. Prostate Manager also contains the extremely important mineral zinc as well as maca, bee pollen, lycopene and boron that have all shown positive benefits for optimal prostate health.
